Growing Chilli Plants from Cuttings?

Sun Apr 10, 2016 6:15 pm

Is it possible to grow Chilli Plants from Cuttings? I did not get as many Hot Orange Plants as I was hoping for, so as I topped one of my plants today I decided to just place the cut of top in a glass of water to see if it's possible to root it. What do you guys think? Have you tried it or seen it done?

I read you need a 45 degree cut and maybe some rooting compound, gel or powder. I may try this myself soon!

Look at this! It's rooting! Tiny roots, but It looks like more roots are on their way. I change the water every now and then. I will let them continue with their rooting on the Window Sill. :-)

The Cutting has really been growing a lot of new roots.

Decided to plant it today.

It's now in a pot, and my plan is to pay attention to it so it gets enough watering over the next days. Lets hope that it will be enough for this to settle as a new Chilli Plant. :)

Planting the Cutting was a success! :-) :-) The Chilli Plant has a lot of new leaves coming and is growing fast.

I've heard of this being done with tomato suckers as well! Can't wait to see future updates from everyone.

Yes and I have seen that in a post on this forum (probably in the tomato section). That's where I got the idea to try it on my chilli plant. :-) I have two more chilli cuttings in a glass of water right now. Hoping that the season will be long enough for them to produce chillis even though they are getting a slight delay compared to the other plants.

A much better head start than from seed!

It's really a great way to speed up the process! :-) This post reminded me to update the Tomatoes from Cutting topic with a picture. Here is the link to that post: How to grow Tomatoes from Cuttings

The Cutting Chilli Plant is thriving! It has Flowers already = at the same time as the Mother Plant from which I took the Cutting!

This is how the roots looked when I transplanted it last week:

And here is a picture of the Plant:

Did you put rooting hormone on it?

No rooting hormone used here. Just the Cutting and a Glass of Water.

This Plant is looking very good now. It has several Flowers and some Chillis coming and is a nice and compact Plant.

Does anyone use honey as rooting hormone? I have read that it works!

I topped my bell pepper plants and I already have lots of bells coming! Great idea to top plants! Cinnamon works best with succulents and tomatoes.

Once all my Thai Hots stop flowering I will try this. With my Jalapeño too!

Picked some Hot Orange Chillis from this Plant today. They look great and I'm Saving Seeds from these two Hot Orange Chillies:

Is this Plant (from cuttings) growing as tall as the "regular" plants from the same variety? What's your general recommendation? Like.. would you recommend to start 3 plants from 3 seeds, or  start 1 plant from seed and then take 2 plants from cuttings? It seems like cuttings saves some time and work in the repotting process?

How sunny was the windowsill? I am trying this with my Thai Hots and it doesn't seem to be working. Was the water cold or hot?

This plant was not growing quite as tall as the other plants, but it dit get a lot of Chillies. I can for sure recommend cuttings as a good way to start a second or a third plant from the same variety.

I started my cutting quite late in the spring, so season was perfect and very sunny. I had it in room temperature in a window sill. Water was room temperatured and I changed the water every third day or so. How long have you waited Ava?

I just now finished up school final tests so I haven't got the time to do this. I have taken a cutting today and placed it in 75% filtered water and 25% tap water. I placed it in the sunniest windowsill in my house. Thanks!
