Growing Cucamelons from Seed

Wed Aug 10, 2016 7:20 am

One of the best news in my Vegetable Garden this year is Cucamelon. It's a climbing Plant that produces lovely little Fruits that looks like a tiny Watermelon, and tastes kind of like a mix between Cucumber, Melon and Lime. A very tasty little Garden Snack!

Cucamelon has many aliases and as far as I know, it's also called 'Mexican Sour Gherkin', 'Sandita' and 'Mouse Melon'.

I started mine from Seeds, and they sprouted nicely within a few days:

I transplanted them to separate Pots (9x9 cm) when the Cucamelon Plants where about this size:

The Plants grew fast indoors, and I was worried that they were growing to fast and to thin.

I moved the Plants Outdoors after a few Weeks. I had three Cucamelon Plants, and decided to move one of them to the Mini Greenhouse, and to move two of the Plants Outdoors. All three Plants was a bit fragile and leggy, and they did struggle a bit when I first moved them outdoors. However they did all recover! (I think there was a bit of magic, since the outdoor Plants really looked dead just a few days after the transplant..)

Transplant of the Greenhouse Cucamelon Plant:

And recovery of one of the outdoor Cucamelon Plants:

It's clear that this type of Plant needs to be in a Greenhouse to thrive here in the Nordics. The Greenhouse Plant grew fast and climbed all over the little Greenhouse. I could see tiny little yellow Flowers and signs of Fruits developing within a few weeks. Here it's Climbing all over my Basil Plant:

It's lovely to see the little Cucamelons developing. I will make sure to grow it again next season!
